Scarlet Letter Analysic- Form, Plot, Tone, Essay - 607 Words

Scarlet Letter Analysis Form, Structure and Plot: The structure that Hawthorne puts the Scarlet Letter is very tight, and is in essentially three parts, each revolving around the scaffold. The first scaffold scene, Hester confesses her sin of adultery to the crowd in the light of day. The second scaffold scene takes place in the middle of the book at night; it is the climax of the plot. Dimmesdale climbs onto the scaffold, and asks for Hester and Pearl to join him. This is not a confession, as there are no witnesses, except for Chillington. The third scaffold scene is at the end of the novel. Here, Dimmesdale is on the scaffold, with Hester and Pearl. It is light out, and they are speaking to a crowd. Here, Dimmesdale confesses his sin.†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"His face darkened with some powerful emotion, which, nevertheless, he instantaneously controlled by an effort of his will, that, save at a singly moment, its expression might have passed for calmness.† The majority of the sentence i s secondary structure. There are two primary- â€Å"his face darkened† and â€Å"he controlled.† The primary structure allows us to understand what is happening at the moment, while the secondary allows us to see an image of what Hawthorne was trying to get across- cynicism. With the first part of the sentence- â€Å"his face darkened with some powerful emotion†, he can imagine his expression growing into a scowl, the air around him darkening as he meets eyes with Hester. Tone: The tone in The Scarlet Letter is moralizing, impassioned, formal, and skeptical. The narrator of the story pretends to be unbiased, although it is blatantly obvious he does not think highly of Puritans. He often spends one to two paragraphs discussing the problems he has with Puritan society, or a law that had effect at the time. Bibliography Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Scarlet letter. Gothic Literature and Romantic Literature - 2607 Words

Novels, written in various styles, maintain their value because each one presents the reader with a new thought to consider. Sometimes however, rather than expanding on an entirely new style to â€Å"suggest a thought† authors borrow characteristics from other novels to express themselves. These borrowed traits are then molded into a new shape. Authors from the Romanticism era did just that. They borrowed traits from Gothic literature to express their thoughts. Although the novels are unique and valued for their distinctiveness, the borrowed traits remain a parallel between the two genres. Traits such as deterioration of characters, love combating sin, return to animalistic priorities, and alienation of human emotion are all depicted in†¦show more content†¦As his soul â€Å"undergoes†¦psychic disorder† (Monsman), his fascination with the grotesqueness of his picture also grows. Gray becomes interested in seeing his sin come alive on canvas. This in itself represents a man who is unstable mentally, as he derives pleasure from his own image’s ruin. Eventually Dorian’s downward spiral of mental ruin leads to his death. In Romantic literature characters also fall into their own personally created ruin. Miss. Havisham is one example of a character that causes her own destruction. Miss. Havisham stops her life at the precise moment when she was left at the altar (Dickens 179-180), and lets her surroundings fall into ruin to symbolize the deterioration of her body and soul. Miss. Havisham depreciates mentally with personal guilt when she sees the heartless person that her daughter has become. Miss. Havisham becomes no more than â€Å"waxwork and skeleton [with] dark eyes that move† (Dickens 56). Miss. When Ian met Julie the love of his heart, he was so sure that she was the woman for her. They had dated for sometime and all along the dating period Julie was sharing a room with some other two friends of hers. One of which was her best friend while the other was a girl they had been together with in the university. They knew that all along they would become financially stable and each would go their way as soon as their income could allow them to afford rent each one on her own. When Julie and Ian decided to come and live together, it was at first not difficult since the two girls shared the rent between themselves. Julie and Ian had stayed together for 3 months when a need arouse for Karen to move out of the town. (Karen is the other girl from the university who was now left living with Tina) Tina is Julie’s best friend. When the news reached Julie that Karen was planning to leave the town she was a bit worried about her best friend since she knew that Tina would not afford to live in there alone. However it was a tough thing to think about since the only left option was to ask Ian if he could allow Tina to come and stay with them even if for some days before she get someone to share a room with or perhaps until she could afford to stay alone. She knew that she had to prepare on the best approach to present this request to Ian. She was worried that may be it might turn out that Ian would refuse that kind of a thing. But she needed to ask him the soonest possible. A thought came into her that it would be necessary to first speak to Tina maybe she might have a different idea. She made her short journey and visited her best friend whom she found in tears. They talked after comforting her and Tina was more than happy to have realized that her friend thought about her in such ways. She knew that her problem was half solved since the only remaining part was now to approach Ian. They agreed that as soon as Ian gave a feedback Julie would let Tina know soonest possible. When Tina returned home that evening she was so restless yet she found it hard to start it to Ian. It was until Ian noticed that her concentration was divided and that she seemed a little bit disturbed. Ian walked to where Julie had sat and sat on the arm of the chair that she had occupied. He looked at her with concern and asked her ‘sweetheart is everything okay? How was your day?’ Julie knew right inside her that this was the perfect moment; she knew that a chance had come and she was not going to waste any time about it. She replied to him ‘everything has been fine but I only worried about my best friend Tina, she is being left by Karen in that room we used to live the three of us. Karen needs to move out of this town as she has got a job elsewhere so she is only around here for a month. The problem here is that we had opted to stay the three of us since none could afford living alone. Just three months after I left Tina to stay with Karen now Karen is about to leave. Tina can not afford it alone’. As she spoke all these Ian just listened without interruption but when she posed Ian asked ‘so what is the problem? Are you suggesting that you want to go back there?’ she knew that this would worry Ian, he would do anything to have in his room and so she said to him ‘you see that is the only other option since it might not be ideal to you to have her here staying with us’ do you think Tina agree to come and stay with us? This was Ian asking. Julie told him that she was not sure about it but if Ian would not have a problem with it then she would ask Tina when they met next about it. Then Ian said; ‘ that is not something to worry about to the point of losing concentration, all is going to be okay for her, we can stay with her if she agrees if she refuses then it means she has a better option and therefore the problem will be solved. Louise Halfe free essay sample

In 1990, she made her first appearance as a poet in Writing the Circle: Native Women of Western Canada. Her other works include Bear Bones and Feather which received the Canadian Peoples Poet Award and Blue Marrow which was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Poetry. The Crooked Good is her latest novel which has just been published. In January of 2005, Halfe was named Saskatchewan’s poet Laureate. She currently lives in Saskatoon with her husband and has two grown children. (McNally Robinson) â€Å"I write because I love. I write for the survival of self, my children, my family, my community and for the Earth. I write to help keep our stories, our truths, our language alive†. (qtd. in Anthology 396. ) This quote describes how Louise Halfe uses all four common elements of native literature in her writings. I have chosen to discuss two of the elements she frequently uses, Spirituality and Orality in relation to three of her poems: My Ledders, She Told Me and The Heat of my Grandmothers. We will write a custom essay sample on Louise Halfe or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Orality is used widely in Halfe’s poetry. In My Ledders she writes as if it were being spoken, using phonetic spelling. It is written in the form of a letter from a native woman to the Pope. She starts the poem â€Å"dear pope i no, i no, you dired of my ledders i couldn’t let dis one go i dought you could do somedin ‘ bout it. † (403) Halfe also uses the repetition of words to express orality. In She Told Me, ‘she always told me’ is used through out the poem to describe Native legends or old wives tales that were passed down to her by her mother. â€Å"She always told me never to eat the guts of animals while I was pregnant or the baby would be born with a rope around the neck† (398) Another example of how Halfe uses storytelling and oral traditions is in her poem The Heat of My Grandmothers. Here Halfe tells the story of her Grandmothers’ life, marriage, birth and the death. In all three of these poems, Halfe intersperses the Cree Language with English, which again shows oral traditions and her need to keep her culture alive. I also feel that it shows her struggle with living in a white society and being a native person. In My Ledders, she says â€Å"years ago you stopped nohkom and nimson† as well the words ‘isistawina’, ‘matotsan’, and ‘kimoti’. (403-404). In She Told Me, Halfe says â€Å"Astam, we are leaving astam do not stay† (398) and in the first verse of The Heat of my Grandmothers â€Å"The old man calls my Nohkomak, a bunch of bitches, pisikwatisiw. † (405) The element of Spirituality is a main theme for Louse Halfe. This is shown greatly in her poem The Heat of my Grandmothers. Here Halfe describes intimacy and love in the first verse â€Å"yes I took painted warriors molded their sinew thighs into my flesh† (405) and in the second verse â€Å"that winter in our teepee the smoke couldn’t hide the fragrance of muskeg tea and juniper we mixed between our bodies. (406) This poem also shows her connectedness with nature when describing the deaths of her grandmothers’ husbands: â€Å"called magpie, crow and raven to clean his body† and â€Å"wailed till the buffalo sweat melted his skin into the prairie grass. † (406) Spirituality is also used in the poem She told me. Halfe describes the menstrual cycle as the moon and the power that women have during this time in the line â€Å"never to walk over me while I was in my moon or they would die from my power†. 398) Furthermore, in this poem she talks about spirits in the line â€Å"to put the food away at night to cove the dishes or the spirits would crackle and dance whistle in our ears and drive us mad† and â€Å"take a willow branch and gently whip the spirits out of the house†. (398) The Spirituality in My Ledders speaks of how it is not right to steal native ceremonies and customs. In this poem, a native woman is writing a letter to the Pope, asking how he would like it if her people performed Holy Communion without the understanding and respect of the bread and wine. I don’t dink you like it if I dook you gold cup and wine pass it ‘round our circles† and â€Å"I haven’t married you jeesuz and I don’t kneel to him cuz he ain’t my god†. (404) How the white men lack understanding of the native rituals, tobacco and the sweat lodge is shown in the verse â€Å"dese men, pope don’t know what tobacco mean, what suffer mean†. (404) By using spirituality and orality in her work, Halve shows us how sharing her history, language, traditions and her connectedness to the earth can help in healing others and past injustices. â€Å"I don’t tell the story, I share the story.
